Kalista started to pack up her supplies for the day, her mind running through a list of what she needed to bring home that night, the marking she needed to finish and the lesson plan for the next classes. The day had been a bit of a long one, talking with a few students after class and working on a few of her own pet projects, before she was finally ready to leave the school around 7pm, her plan and the plan of the universe was adversely different though.
Yawning as she passed from the classroom into the hallways heading to the teachers lounge to wash her coffee mug and then return to the hall when a sound caught her attention. It was the sound of scampering and struggling as chitters of panic ensued. Stopping dead in her tracks she raised her hand to her shoulder where her white furry friend still sat hammocked in her scarf, his slow and steady breathing indicated he was sleeping off the dinner they had scrounged together. The sound continued as she pressed on towards the audible panic, her mind raced with the thoughts of what it could be, and when she turned the hall she quickly found where the sound was coming from. The small dining area where the students normally gathered to eat, the sound emanated from the door that led to the kitchen area.
Pushing her key into the door she turned the handle and looked inside. The light pulled in from the hall into the back of a storage area, and as she explored further, she would discover the source of the sound. A grey mouse was stuck in a trap, a nonlethal trap but a trap all the same. Her heart pained with the sound of its cries for help, the cries which she understood fluently, no different than a crying child or wounded pet. “whoa, whoa your okay, i got you” she would say., her tone soft and empathetic. Dropping to her knees in front of the mouse and pulling the release pin on the trap. “there we go isn’t that better?” She asked the mouse as she offered her hand towards the mouse. There was an almost instantaneous bond that they shared, and she let the mouse climb onto her palm slowly rising to a stand. “I don’t think I can let you stay here with all the traps around, maybe its best if we take you to another spot eh?” She confirmed with the mouse before moving up to the door. She moved with grace from the storage room to the hallway with the mouse held safely in her kind and caring heart.
As she moved through the building she would chat with this mouse, getting to know more about it, where its home was and the stories it wanted to share with her, all of which she was happy to listen to as she responded back with small remarks. “oh, yeah?” She replied as she rounded the corner closest to the dormitory side, almost all of her attention diverted to the mouse and not really at all with her surroundings. She placed the mouse where they requested, a small crack that led into the wall, on the outside layer of the building. “ have a wonderful evening, I'll see what we can do about the traps but in the meanwhile stay out of them” she promised before standing up and brushing her outfit off, before turning her head to the side and nuzzling the small white mouse still snoozing in her scarf, he was quite a deep sleeper.
